SHMS Welcome Families Fall 2022 Letter

Grizzly Families,

Welcome to a brand new school year, filled with traditions and celebrations we’re all excited to have again.  We are thrilled to welcome our awesome students and great community into the 2022-23 school year!  In this letter, you can see upcoming dates and important details for your student’s middle school experience.  Additionally, you can see our daily bell schedule and school district calendar enclosed in this mailing and on our website. 

Upcoming Dates: 

• Friday, August 19th: Office secretaries return, school offices open 8am-2pm

• Monday, August 29th: Open House from 4-6:30pm district-wide - student schedules will be available for pick-up

• Tuesday, August 30th: No School, Teacher Professional Development

• Wednesday, August 31st: First Day of School

• Monday, September 5th: No School, Labor Day

Important Details: 

• Open House: All 5th-8th grade teachers will be in classrooms available for you to visit between 4-6:30pm.  Teachers will also have at least a one-page document with information about their class. Families will also be available to pick up student schedules.

• Belonging: Last year, we emphasized belonging as our focus. We are continuing this work as we want our students, families, and staff - the entire Grizzly Family - to feel they belong and that others believe in them. 

• New Cell Phone Procedure: Due to dozens of minor incidents as well as several major incidents involving law enforcement, we are adopting a new cell phone procedure. Students will either turn their phone/device(s) into a secured and assigned pocket holder near the teacher’s desk, or can keep their phones completely out of sight for the entire school day. Students not following the procedure after multiple reminders will require the parent/family to pick up the phone/device from the office. 

• Behavioral Expectations & Disciplinary Procedures: The Handbook can also be found on our website. Staff and students will review the handbook during the 2nd week of school and review at home for family signature as well.

• Dean of Students (Assistant Principal role): Mrs. Serena Carlson, who has taught PE at NHS for the last 4 years, has her administrative credentials and is going to be a big addition to our office staff. 

• Transportation w/First Student: Our contract expired with Durham, and we are excited about First Student’s responsiveness to our requests and agreeing with our priorities: student safety, communication, and responsiveness to families. Their new office number is (509) 508-0727. 

• Supply lists: Recommended supply lists can be found for each grade level on our website. 

Connecting with our families and community is one of my main priorities this year as we aim to be much more connected than the past two years. I look forward to seeing you all at Open House, Monday the 29th, from 4-6pm. This year brings excitement as we bring back more cherished events/activities to make connections with our Griz Family.
