Washington Paid Family Medical Leave

Paid Family and Medical Leave provides paid time off when a serious health condition prevents you from working or when  you need to take time off to care for a family member with a serious health condition, or if you're bonding with a new baby or child in the family.

NECESSARY STEPS YOU MUST TAKE PRIOR TO TAKING WA PAID FAMILY & MEDICAL LEAVE

Notify your supervisor and Human Resources of your intention to take leave at least 30 days prior to your anticipated leave date.

  • Notice must be in writing with an anticipated leave start date and anticipated return to work date.
  • Certified employees may be required to prepare lesson plans.
  • Employees may be requested to train their substitute prior to leave beginning.

You must complete the Paid Family Medical Leave Checklist and submit it to Human Resources at least 30 days prior to your anticipated leave date.

You must enter any time missed into Red Rover.  HR will use the absence reason entered into Red Rover for your time off.  If you are taking off time for WA Paid Family Medical Leave, you must choose Paid Family Medical Leave as the absence reason in Red Rover.  IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW, THAT ANY TIME ENTERED AS PAID FAMILY MEDICAL LEAVE WILL BE CONSIDERED LEAVE WITHOUT PAY FOR THE DISTRICT AND DEDUCTED FROM YOUR PAYROLL.  HR is under the assumption that you will receive compensation from the state.

You should review the following leave policies on the district's website:  5401, 5402, and 5404  and you should review your collective bargaining agreement for further information.

  • Review your available leave balances in Skyward.

Provide instructions to Human Resources as to how you would like your pay processed for any portion of your leave not covered by your accrued time and/or Washington Paid Family Medical Leave.  This may require a scheduled meeting to review your leave balances and any applicable anticipated leave without pay amounts.
