Staff Checklist for Maternity Leave
Prior to your child's birth
Notify your supervisor and Human Resources of your intention to take maternity leave at least 30 days prior to your anticipated leave date.
- Notice must be in writing with an anticipated leave start date and anticipated return to work date.
- Certified employees may be required to prepare lesson plans.
- Employees may be requested to train their substitute prior to maternity leave beginning.
You must complete the Paid Family Medical Leave Checklist and submit it to Human Resources at least 30 days prior to your anticipated leave date.
You should review the following leave policies on the district's website: 5401, 5402, and 5404 and you should review your collective bargaining agreement for further information.
- Review your available leave balances in Skyward.
If you are applying for Washington Paid Family Medical Leave, you must read all pertinent information on the Washington Paid Family Medical Leave site.
Washington Paid Family & Medical Leave Notice to Employees
Provide instructions to Human Resources as to how you would like your pay processed for any portion of your leave not covered by your accrued time and/or Washington Paid Family Medical Leave. This may require a scheduled meeting to review your leave balances and any applicable anticipated leave without pay amounts.
After your child's birth
Contact Human Resources to let them know you have delivered the baby.
If you are applying for Washington Paid Family Medical Leave, you will want to begin your claim process. You will be required to upload forms to their site and it would be helpful to complete as much as possible prior to giving birth. If you are enrolled in SEBB, review the process for adding your child to your medical, dental and vision coverage, as well as information about dependent care flexible spending.
Keep in contact with your supervisor and Human Resources in regards to any changes in your maternity leave plan or medical complications.
Just before returning to work
Schedule a time to talk with your supervisor to discuss your return to work date.
If your child will be enrolled in childcare, you may want to consider scheduling his/her first day prior to your return to work date. You can ease your child in by starting with a few hours and building up to a regular schedule.
