Welcome to Newport High School!

It is with great enthusiasm that I write this letter, as the incoming principal at Newport High School!  I am honored to be joining this family of Grizzly staff and students for the 2019-2020 school year! The educators at NHS are special. Each staff member is committed to improving student learning, providing challenging academic coursework, as well as helping your student to attain skills that will prepare them for life beyond high school. Furthermore, NHS offers a vast selection of extra-curricular activities through athletics and clubs that supports students’ interests  beyond the classroom; further developing personal growth.

Newport High School will move into our second year of a trimester system, where our five-period schedule has allowed us to expand the availability of courses for students. Currently, we offer a wide array of Career and Technical Education courses, such as, Construction, Fabrication, Leadership, Automotive Technology, Computer Science, Robotics, IT Repair, Media Broadcasting, Radio, Digital Design, Business and Marketing, Biomedical Sciences, Ceramics, Financial Literacy, Fire Science, Horticulture and Environmental Sciences, Drawing and Painting. In addition to our traditional electives, we will continue to offer German, French, Spanish, Drama, Creative Writing, Food and Fitness, as well as Bridge to College English. Advanced Preparatory classes, and intervention courses for Math and English will also continue to be choices for students, along with EWU College in the High School, as well as challenging core offerings that gives students a strong foundation for success during and after high school.

At NHS, we will be focusing on four areas for improvement. They are assessment practices and outcomes, as well as bettering our rates of attendance, sustaining an already strong graduation rate and decreasing our freshman failure rate. As your principal, I welcome your comments, suggestions and questions regarding any of these areas.

Our staff at NHS desires to continue our work towards becoming a top rural high school in Washington State. Newport students deserve our best, and it will be our goal to provide students with a rigorous education, and safe learning environment that fosters personal growth. Additionally, we value connections with our families, because we recognize that student-parent-educator partnerships gives our students a greater chance of achieving the dreams and desires of their hearts! Simply put, We Are Better Together! I look forward to talking with, and getting to know each of you. Please stop by our office, or catch me at a school event to say hello if I don’t make it to you first. Wishing everyone a great year!
