• National Honor Society NHS National Honor Society

  •    The National Honor Society is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921. In recent years, we have made the requirements for Newport High School's National Honor Society more and more challenging. Now required from all of our members, both potential and current, is a 3.5 grade point average, involvement in both school and community service activities, as well as participation in at least two school-sponsored clubs/sports/programs. We are striving to create an extraordinary service organization in which only those students of the highest caliber will want to take part.
Each January, we open our honor society to all students at Newport High School. Each potential member is required to complete an extensive application which is then reviewed by a panel of current NHS members and several staff. Upon acceptance into the society, we have a formal "tapping ceremony" at which we celebrate the accolades of our new inductees.
Each year, our National Honor Society participates in at least one service project per trimester. In both the fall and spring, we work with the Second Harvest Food Bank to distribute goods for those in our community that need the extra help. During the winter, we do our annual "Hometown Christmas" at the Newport Roxy. This is, by far, our most popular event. In our inaugural year (2018), we had over 175 people join us for this free holiday occasion! We had crafts, games, a trivia quiz, and of course, a MOVIE! Last year was the "Polar Express" but in 2019, it will be "Elf." During our spring trimester, several of our NHS members travel to Stratton Elementary to help the kindergarteners celebrate the 100th day of school with "Zero the Hero!" In addition to all of these activities, the National Honor Society is a "go to" service organization for any group that needs help. We consider ourselves to be the ultimate "servant leaders" in our school. Join us! For more information, click the link below.
